SAN CARLOS/GUAYMAS
HISTORY:
The Spanish arrived in this area in the mid-16th century. In 1710 Jesuit priests arrived and built a mission, intending to convert the local Natives. Guaymas was officially declared a port in 1814 and it proceeded to become an important trade center with Europe. The port was taken over by three times over the next several years.
WEATHER:
From December to March temperatures range in the mid to high 60’s (degrees Fahrenheit) June through October temperatures are in the high 80’s. In winter months the evenings and mornings are chilly enough to require a light jacket.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
There are several luxurious resort hotels in San Carlos. Meals, sports, tips and drinks are included in the price at the Club Med Sonora Bay. Most of the hotels have a restaurant, bar, and a pool. Most rooms in the Plaza Los Glorias have a small kitchen and some have private hot tubs.
RESTAURANTS:
El Publito is said to be the most sophisticated restaurant with authentic Mexican décor. Chefs have a flare for creative presentation, artfully arranging your food. Most of the local favorites are the family run restaurants where you can experience regional favorites.
NIGHTLIFE:
There are sports bars, clubs, discos, and bars located around town or in hotels. If you prefer a quiet evening there are lighted tennis courts, a bowling alley, and a billiards room.
SHOPPING:
Hand crafted jewelery, paintings, baskets, sculptures, Indian masks, hats, antiques, gifts, souvenirs, and carvings are some of the items you will find located in various shops and stores.
CUISINE:
In the restaurants you will find Mexican, international, French, Italian, steaks, seafood, and Chinese cuisine. The local favorite is seafood with a Mexican twist.
SERVICES:
Banks: The Banamex is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. There are two Bi-lingual ATMs inside.
Internet: There are four Internet cafes located in San Carlos and one in Guaymas. The majority of them also sell coffee and pastries.
Transportation: There are several car rental agencies around town as well as located in some hotels.
